Do you ever complete a book and just think, “Well, that was a good time!”? There are books that are good, but deep or dark. There are books that are light and easy, but come & go without fanfare or memory. But, there are some books that are simply FUN to read.
One of the joys of my life has been reading books aloud to my kids. It can be tricky to find good books for kids, and specifically good books to read aloud, and even more specifically: good books to read aloud to boys. Here is a list of books that we have enjoyed reading together over many years, between his ages of 6 and 9.

I love summer, and I think at least partly it’s because as a rebel (who resists expectations) I am nostalgic for the glory days of few obligations or responsibilities. I wrote about this last week… it’s a theme! And what is more leisurely than strolling the stacks at the library, then lazily reading on the hammock, couch, in a treehouse, on a blanket spread in the grass or on the sand. I seemed to have the luxury of endless hours of reading in my youth, though now that pleasure is mostly saved for holidays and Sunday afternoons.
I love to read, and I love to read memoirs. There are loads of lists out there of great memoirs, and, well… this is another one. Some titles will be familiar & common, though I’ve left out some faves that I’ve already mentioned (many times) before — Born A Crime, The Glass Castle, Bossypants — in favor of other titles [though, truth to tell, I have also mentioned some of these before.] I hope that you can find something to read over the holidays!
